La Mesha Irizarry

La Mesha Irizarry is Co-Director of the Idriss Shelley Foundation, providing services to families of color whose loved ones have been killed or disabled by law enforcement.

Nominator: “The Idriss Stelley Foundation has no website, no funding, and isn’t registered as a nonprofit. They run the whole thing out of Irizarry’s one-bedroom apartment in Bayview-Hunters Point. They’re about as grassroots as grassroots gets. And they never stop working. The foundation has a 24-hour crisis hotline for victims of police brutality and their families. … She supports victims of police violence in her son’s name[…] La Mesha is an activist powerhouse and teacher. […] She is a brilliant leader in our community.”
